The Pup with No Name
My mom and I were running errands, likely for dog food. A pet shop with a puppy in an exercise pen caught our attention. It was summer, and there was no cover for shade. This was in the 1990s. We stopped, walked inside, and spoke to the owner. Here's how that brief exchange between my mom and this man went…
“Why is this puppy sitting outside in the blazing sun? We are taking him home! How much?”
His reply: "$80 and he's yours. Every minute he's here, he's costing me money!"
He got his $80, and our plans abruptly changed. We knew nothing about him other
than he was a Dachshund about six months old. Nothing else mattered except getting
this puppy home. The name Casey came to mind, and by the time we were home, he
had one!
He settled into his forever home quickly, and my mom wasted no time in
reporting this pet shop to the proper authorities. The authorities shut this
shop down within a week.
Casey was now a member of our GREYSETT family, enjoying a happy life surrounded
by love. We had our English Setters, Dachshunds, Whippets and Greyhounds. Yes,
siree, we were a well-blended multi-breed family.
As he entered his golden years, he developed diabetes requiring insulin. Our
veterinarian at the time taught me how to administer the medicine he needed,
using a saline solution or something similar. There’s a first time for
everything, and this required practice: a lot on my end! Under his watchful eye,
I followed his instructions, seeing that solution go in one way and come out another.
Oops, try, try, and try again. Practice leads to competency, and it didn’t take
very long to get this procedure down pat. Then he developed epilepsy. There are
different types of seizures, and Casey’s were petit mal seizures. We managed
them as they occurred.
Despite these health issues, he was loved beyond measure. He crossed the Bridge
at the age of 13.
Casey remains another cherished memory of our GREYSETT family.
He will never be forgotten.

How could you not fall for that precious face?
ReplyDeleteA dachshund gave me my first (and so far only) bite. To be fair, I was really young and probably did something that the dog didn't like.
Thanks, weavingwoman, he was precious. Always appreciate your comments.
DeleteIt sounds like Casey was a precious addition to your family. I look at those precious eyes and what I see is pure love for someone that brought so much love.
